Azhagi++. What is it?

By/With God's Grace, it is a new app, allowing direct typing in Tamil in all applications and containing a potpourri of nifty tools (Tamil Fonts Converter, Sanskrit Tamil Converter, Auto Transliterator, Reverse Transliterator, etc., etc., etc.), for Windows desktops/laptops that has been developed for the benefit of all those who are in need of the same. These tools are handily available via a system tray menu too, in addition to being available in the app's starting screen. Much like the other apps of azhagi.com, Azhagi++ is also 100% free - For life.

How to Download Azhagi++?

Kindly read this section ("How to avail Azhagi+?") section FULLY. Clear-cut instructions are present therein as to how to obtain the download link for Azhagi++ from me.

Related Free Apps - AAW and AAE

There are two other related apps - AAW and AAE (short for Azhagi's Addins for MS Word AND Azhagi's Addins for MS Excel, resp.). If interested, you may please get to know more about them.

Operating system and MS Office requirements

• Win7 and above. In other words, Win7, Win8, Win10 and Win11 are supported.


• For 'Tamil Fonts Converter' and 'Sanskrit Tamil Colorizer' tools (as well for the 'Super-fast typing' and 'Smart editing' features of the 'Direct typer'), all of MS Office (2007 and above) supported.

NOTE-1: Azhagi++ is a standalone application like Azhagi+. So, as such, it has no direct connection with MS Word. The 'Tamil Fonts Converter' and 'Sanskrit Tamil Colorizer' (as well as the 'Super-fast typing' and 'Smart editing' features of the 'Direct typer') will come into action only if there are any open MS Word documents.

NOTE-2: For the abovesaid MS-Word related tools and features to work normally, you need to start MS Word first and then Azhagi++. So, whenever you open MS Word (or reopen it after closing it earlier), in case Azhagi+ is already running, make sure to close and restart Azhagi++. If you use AAW of course, such a situation does not arise, obviously.

NOTE-3: In case the MS-Word related tools and features are not working for you, both in Azhagi++ and in AAW, then, I suggest you try to use the latest version of MS Office (e.g. MS Office 365) in your system, if not already using.

Enhancements/Differences

• The much enhanced 'Direct Typing' feature in Azhagi++ has been explained in great detail in a separate page - https://azhagi.com/azpp-direct-typer.php - please read it, for sure, so that you can reap full benefits while typing, esp. in MS Word.


• All the tools can be accessed both from the opening screen of Azhagi+ and from the tray icon menu.


• You can Click-start or Click-stop the process of "Global typing in Tamil" from both the opening screen and from the tray icon menu.


• In the opening screen of Azhagi++, the above is achieved by clicking the menu item 'Start/Stop' Global typing in Azhagi++'s opening screen.


• In the system tray icon of Azhagi++, the same is achieved EITHER by middle-clicking on Azhagi++'s tray icon OR right-clicking and clicking the menu item "Start/Stop Global typing".


• When you do global typing, 'TA' icon will appear in system tray. When you do 'single application' typing, 'அ' icon will appear in the system tray.


• In the 'Tamil Fonts Converter' (TFC), there is a 'swap' button (<>) available for swapping from/to font encodings easily.


• All the options and selections in the 'Tamil Fonts Converter' screen are saved so that TFC always starts with the last saved settings.


• There is a 'Convert As Plain Text' option also in TFC. Plain text conversions will always be lightning fast (for e.g. just 1 to 2 seconds even for a 60 pages MS Word document). That means, for 1 or 2 pages OR for very short texts, the time taken for conversion will be in micro/milliseconds and hence the TFC screen would report that as "0 seconds" only.


• Patterns for fonts can be set in 'AzhagiPlus-NonUniSearchPatterns.txt' file (you can find this file in "C:\..\..\Azhagi++\Atma\Tamil Fonts Converter\" folder). For e.g. "STMZH, SR-, RGB_, RGB-, ST-" | "Bamini, Kalaham" | "Ka , JF" | etc. What this means is that when someone selects an encoding like STMZH in Azhagi++'s Tamil Fonts Converter (TFC, for short), the fonts listed under "Select From/To NonUni Font" will have not only your installed STMZH fonts listed but SR, RGB, etc. fonts too.


• Apart from the above, please see the 'Change Log' in the download page of Azhagi++ too, to see the latest features added or latest modifications done, as I keep releasing new versions of Azhagi++ now and then.


• I observed that minimising the MS Word window during conversion helps to convert the texts faster.


• So, if formatting is not essential to be maintained in for you (either for some selected text OR the whole document), then, you can always tick the 'Convert As Plain Text' option.


• I observed that if more then one document are opened, clicking the 'Convert' button in TFC effects the conversion in the currently open document window. If all ms word windows are minimised, then conversion takes place in the last minimised window.

How to avail Azhagi++?

• In a nutshell, after compulsorily reading a set of 5 sections (5 sections), you just need to send me an email (to my [email protected] email id), requesting for Azhagi++'s download link (confirming FOR SURE that you have read the aforementioned 5 sections) and I shall send you back the download link for Azhagi++. Kindly please do read the aforementioned 5 sections for sure before emailing me, because those 5 sections contain some very important information, esp. regarding how your AntiVirus software may behave while downloading and/or installing Azhagi++. Hence, PLEASE READ, for sure.


• Since Azhagi++ is a new application, some(not all) of the Antivirus software may mistakenly (i.e. wrongly) consider Azhagi++ as a virus. Hence, I have not provided any download link in this page, as of now. In other words, I am not in a position to make the download link publicly available, as of now. I am sure you fully understand and kindly bear with me on this. Otherwise, please note that functionally, Azhagi++ is all working perfectly, as of now.

Checklist: What to do before installing Azhagi++ and during/after installation of Azhagi++?

• As of now, I will be providing Azhagi++ as a portable version only (i.e. as a zip file). The process to be followed to install the portable version will be "similar" to what you find in https://azhagi.com/portable. So, please do read the step-by-step instructions in the aforesaid web page and apply the same in installing the portable version of Azhagi++.


• While downloading Azhagi++, your AntiVirus application (Windows Defender, NAV, AVG, Avast, K7, etc.) "might" caution/warn you about the 'Azhagi++.zip' file but that is only quite normal since this is the first time it is seeing the Azhagi++ zip file. These "mistaken warnings" are called as FALSE positives (an extremely vexing issue for individual developers like me). So, you can proceed ahead normally, informing your AntiVirus warning screen that it is "Okay" for you to proceed ahead with the installation.


• In case of Windows Defender, you need to click 'More info' and then 'Run Anyway' in its first warning screen (if any).


• Mistakenly, if your AntiVirus application does not allow you to download/extract the Azhagi+ zip file at all (OR deletes the zip or the executable inside it itself completely), then what best you can do is to read this section and also this one and act accordingly.


• If you are effecting conversion/colorisation of an existing important document, then kindly PLEASE DOUBLY ENSURE that you have taken a BACKUP of that document before effecting any conversion/colorization/etc. Better to have the backup both in your system's hard disk and in an external hard disk or pen drive.


• Please try conversion/colorization in your personal computer only first. Thereafter, you may try it in your office system(s), "if at all" you have the need to install and use Azhagi++ in your office system(s) too, and "if at all" your office gives you full permission to use Azhagi++ in your office system(s).

AntiVirus applications' FALSE warnings/deletions and the great problems caused by them to individual developers like me

• Please read this - https://www.azhagi.com/helps#SetRightYourAV - to know ALL about what all problems are caused by "FALSE positives" generated by AntiVirus software.


• Sometimes, the Azhagi++ zip file may be completely deleted by your Antivirus application too.


• All these kinds of behaviour by Antivirus applications are indeed a vexing issue for individual developers like me but nothing much can be done about it unless I spend money (annually) on digitally signing all the software I develop.

Which AntiVirus software do not pose any issues, as such, with regard to Azhagi++?
What best can be done in case you face issues due to your AntiVirus app?

• Windows Defender does not pose any issues, as such. It "may" however identify Azhagi++ as an unrecognized app in its initial screen. You just need to click 'More info' in that screen and then click the button 'Run Anyway'. Thereafter, it "may" say that Azhagi++ is from an unknown publisher. All this is normal. You just need to click 'Yes' and proceed ahead with the installation. That's all. If all these initial warnings have to be avoided, I need to go for signing my software only, which is an annual affair costing a lot. As of now, I do not wish to go for that for an app like Azhagi++ which is 100(000......)% free for life. I dont know whether the software industry will ever change to allow freeware developers like me to sign their software for free.


• As far as I can say, in my personal humble opinion, Microsoft's inbuilt 'Windows Defender' application is a more than enough security since Win7 itself. Personally, I have been using 'Windows Defender' only since my Win7 days itself (i.e. since more than a decade), in all my Windows systems.


• However, you are the best judge when it comes to your own systems. If you use and prefer to continue to use external AntiVirus software like NAV, Avast, AVG, K7, etc., then so be it.


• So, if you have NAV, AVG, etc., what might happen? These antivirus applications "may" prevent you from installing Azhagi++. What to do in that case, I have written in detail here - you may please read if and when possible for you and act accordingly.

Easy solutions to issues faced (if any) while effecting conversions of MS Word documents

• Well, so far, no major issues have been reported by users who have tried out the "Tamil Fonts Converter".


• Whatever minor (yet mightily irking ones) issues they have faced so far seem to be because of not effecting one "must-do-language-setting" in MS Word. It took quite some time for me to figure out this solution. Since even 2 of the users who were facing the minor issue could not find time to come out with any solution, I started to figure it out myself. Many hours got spent by me in finding out this solution. But when I found the solution finally, it was all joy, happiness and exuberance. It was all Beloved Baba'a Grace and Compassion finally. Sairam..... The solution is as follows (in MS Word 2007):


1. Click on 'Word Options' button.

2. In the screen which gets shown, click on 'Language Settings' button in the right handside.

3. You will get to see a screen with list of languages. Please see screenshot below for better understanding.

4. In this screen, kindly ensure that 'Tamil' is selected and seen in the right-hand-side list and not in the left-hand-side list. Just enabling 'Tamil' is enough. No need to install it, as such.



5. Once you have ensured the above, exit that screen, then 'Word Options' screen and finally 'MS Word' itself. This is a MUST.

6. Restart MS Word.

Note: According to your version of MS Word, the steps above and the screen above may vary.


• Well, apart from the above, existence of some AutoCorrect and AutoFormat options may also cause problems. So, I once again request you to untick ALL the Autocorrect and AutoFormat options which you feel or know already that they might interfere with the conversion process.


• Even after effecting the language setting and doing the needful with regard to AutoCorrect/AutoFormat options, if you still face any issues during any of the conversions, contact me with samples of inputs and ouputs. But, not before you have written or said "at least" a few words of thanks to the Lord Almighty and a few words of praise to the Lord Almighty. The more thanks and praise you express in your words to the Lord Almighty, the more happy I shall be. Sairam.....

If the person known to you is not tech-savvy OR does not understand English well, then, if at all possile for you, you shall explain them about the 5 sections yourself and if they remain "interested", you shall share the download link with them, in the understanding that either you will take care of all their future support needs OR they will take care of the same themselves.
