Introduction - a 20+ years long tool

The 'Auto Transliterator' which you find in AAW (short for "Azhagi's Addins for MS Word") is not anything new. It has been already existing for more than 20 years (i.e. since 2000 itself). But, it has been existing in 'Classic Azhagi' (i.e. Old Azhagi, released in 2000) only, and not in Azhagi+ which was released in 2011. Now, the same tool has been enhanced in some ways and provided in AAW. Those who are using Classic Azhagi's 'Auto Transliterator' regularly shall start using this enhanced 'Auto Transliterator' hereafter.

AAW's Auto Transliterator (AT, for short). What does it do?

AT helps to convert Tanglish text to Unicode Tamil text, in quick time. For e.g. if you have a Tanglish content like "neenga eppadi irukkeenga?", AT helps to convert it into "நீங்க எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?" in a jiffy. For better understanding, kindly see the screenshot here.

Is there any other 'auto transliterator' like the one found in AAW?

In 2000 or so, when AT was first released as part of 'Classic Azhagi', as far as I knew, it was Unique. May be it is still unique, even as of Nov 2022. I don't know. Only users have to let me know after using AT. But, one thing. I am cherishing some fond ideas to enhance this module to a very great degree, time-permitting. Once that gets fructified, I think AT will be truly Unique, features-wise/benefits-wise. Pray God that I get the required time.

Interested to know about the IMMENSE benefits of AT?

Auto transliteration has helped some of Azhagi's users immensely. A few instances are mentioned below:

• What Azhagi's AT (as well as RT, DS and in fact the whole of 'Classic Azhagi') have done for generations of Tamil descendants in South Africa, to sustain their Tamil/Spiritual culture and tradition just cannot be expressed in words. Because of Azhagi (esp. RT, AT and DS), the current generation of Tamil children and youth (who can speak Tamil but not read Tamil) can easily sing Tamil devotional songs in temples and spiritual SatSangs by availing the transliterated Tamil text in English. Shri. Moon Moodley (resident of S.Africa and a respected Maths professor) who took great efforts in achieving and sustaining this process has exchanged several emails with me in this regard, since 2007 or so. An extract from one of his emails (dt. Jan 2011) hereunder. He has also met me in person at my home 3 or 4 times (whenever he was here in Chennai) to come and see me in person and express his hearty hearty heaty heartfelt gratitude to Azhagi in tons and tons and tons. I will share extracts from some more emails of Shri. Moon Moodley in times to come.

  I completed some 160 songs using a user friendly system (a system of English phonics familiar to first language speakers of English)....and when they wanted to type out the Tamil, there was nobody to do it. Then they found AZHAGI....which amazingly converted {i.e. AUTO-Transliterated} my transliteration {i.e. English phonics} and typed out the Tamil to some 95% accuracy...I was elated that Azhagi could do that! You have a GREAT program!

• As such, AT is of immense help to all those users who had typed out their Tamil slokas, songs, poems, articles, film scripts, etc. earlier in 'Tanglish' OR collected some matter from the internet which are in Tanglish. To convert their works in Tamil now, there is no need for them to retype the entire existing matter. They just have to paste their Tanglish texts in the ETA of Azhagi and Azhagi will do the rest. Of course, there will be some areas wherein they have to make some minor corrections and alterations. Tamil film scriptwriters find Auto-Transliteration immenselfy helpful.


• This is what Shri. Sundar Krishnamurthy of Bangalore had to say after availing the 'Auto Transliteration' feature: "Thank you very much. You have saved a lot of my valuable time vide your 'Auto Transliteration' tool. The Lord Almighty shall reward you for this.
  Shri. Sundar Krishnamurthy had loads of texts related to "Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam" in transcribed form and as a senior citizen was worried over the efforts needed to convert them all in Tamil. Azhagi did the conversion in no time for him and helped him to easily distribute his divine-related work to 100s of other people.


• One of my dearest friends (Calicut REC/NIT college mate), Ravikumar, had to compile some Divine songs in a book for a group of devotees going on a Sabarimala trip. Since he could not get some of the songs in net, he wrote them all in transliterated English itself. But then, they had to be in Tamil for the group, eventually. So, for the first time in his life, in 2017, he tried Azhagi. Initially, he started typing the transliterated English texts itself again using Azhagi+ and whatsapped this to me - "I downloaded your creation. When I typed in English script, it was amazing to see the Tamil script coming on screen. Really amazing da. I was in tears when I was typing English script and seeing Tamil script on the screen.".
  Later on, hesitatingly, my friend asked me whether it is possible to convert all the songs in English to Tamil in one go, using any app? I informed him that it is possible through Azhagi itself and thus introduced him to the AT module of 'Classic Azhagi' and this is what he had to say - "Downloaded Classic Azhagi yesterday and did conversion of a few songs. Amazing and DIVINE.". My friend's work included getting "Sri Ayyappa Sahasranamam (1008)" in Tamil too and he sounded quite happy and Divinely satisfied, at the end of the day.


• AT can be used to convert data in Excel files too. Just select some columns of data from your Excel file, paste these data in the (English Text Area - the upper text area) of AT. They will be copied in columns itself, each column separated by a tab character. After the conversion is over, the converted text in Tamil will appear in the TTA (Tamil text area - the bottom text area) with each column's characters separated by a tab character. Copy and paste this data from TTA and paste it in some blank columns of your Excel file and you have your converted data ready in Tamil.

How to avail AT?

Kindly read this section ("How to avail AAW?") section FULLY. Clear-cut instructions are present therein as to how to obtain the download link for AAW from me. Once you install AAW in your system, you can avail AT easily, as it is one of the several modules of AAW.

Please share your feelings of joy, gratitude and appreciation, uninhibitedly

As I keep saying/writing repeatedly, Azhagi is God's Own App. So, the more you keep sharing your happiness (esp. effervescently, if you can, as written in detail here) on AT's features, the more Glory and Thanks to the Lord Almighty. Not anything you say appreciatively on AT goes to me, as I am a non-entity. All your feelings of joy, gratitude and appreciation reaches the Lord Almighty straight. That's the spirit in which I work with respect to Azhagi SatKarma. As Ever, All Glory and Thanks to the Lord Almighty only. For Ever. I am an utter non-entity.

So, my most humble request is that before trying to find out any bugs in AT and report the same to me, kindly share with me FIRST as to what you feel about AAW's various modules (DT, AT and RT, etc.) and their features.

That's to say, as such, you need not even try out AAW, initially. After going through the web page links carrying the features of AAW's various modules, just let me know heartily first, as to what you feel about the various modules (DT, AT, RT, etc.) and their features. That's what I welcome foremost, as the very first thing, from any user. Because, even if there are errors in any of the modules, they would anyway get corrected sooner or later.

What is important for me (from any user), as one's initial feedback, upon getting to know and use a new module/feature of AAW, is your hearty feelings. Features overview of AT

• As such, it is self-explanatory.


• Just one tip alone. When you paste your English (rather Tanglish) text from an external source onto the ETA (English Text Area - the upper text area) of AT, in general, the whole text is converted into it's Tamil equivalent. But, sometimes you might require that some portions of your pasted text be kept in English itself, without conversion. To achieve this, if you keep ticked the option 'Use backquote character to mark out texts which need not be processed', and if your copied English text has certain portions delimited within backquote character, then these portions will be kept in English itself without conversion. For e.g. you can have your external text as: "appaa, eppadi irukkeenga? `I am fine`" and when you copy this text in the ETA of AT, "appaa, eppadi irukkeenga?" will be converted to Tamil (as "அப்பா, எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?") but "I am fine" will be kept intact in English itself.


• The 'X' modifier and 'alternate mappings' aspect of DT, along with the AT and RT modules (and a few more) were ready in 2019 Jan or so itself, as part of Azhagi+ 10.46 (the supposedly next version of Azhagi+). But then, I just could not release Azhagi+ 10.46 at all after testing out all the various modules I had added in it. Happy that a way was shown by the Lord Almighty, at last, to release the modules already done (as part of the upcoming Azhagi+ 10.46), through AAW, one by one.


• Well, in light of the above info, you can very well realise that more modules will be added 🙂 to AAW in times to come, in addition to the DT, AT and RT modules which have got added in Nov 2022.
