  • Even as of today (25 years after the inception of Azhagi in 2000), Azhagi still remains as one of the most sought after tools to type/transliterate in Indian languages (in fact, "THE tool" for many, esp. when it comes to Tamil).

The SSSY Tamil write-up on Swami's Azhagi Free Apps
Who is this Viswanathan? Who is that 'Azhagi'?
May be in today's world, when internet access is prevalent and mobile usage is widespread, it may feel easier to find a few tools to type in Indian languages in digital devices (whenever the need arises). But, at the dawn of this century, when our country, Bharath, had just begun to shine like a sun in the sky of our software services industry, almost each and every one of our Indian folks was longing to type in their mother tongue and operate the computer. At those times, the one who created a revolution by developing “AZHAGI”, an amazing Transliteration Software for Tamil and other Indian languages, is this Mr. Viswanathan. If you, the reader of this article, are someone involved in works related to Tamil typing, then there is absolutely no need to introduce you to 'Azhagi' software or to explain its greatness!

(Note: Even as of today, 25 years after the inception of Azhagi in 2000, Azhagi still remains as one of the most sought after tools to type/transliterate in Indian languages, esp. Tamil. Please see these recommendations by AI tools, in this connection.)

Totally free!! With free support too!!
In the world of computers, thousands of Indian engineers have achieved! Many have created innovations and wonders! But the very next day after creating them, they would rush to sell them to multinational companies or go to work for them! Only one in a crore will possess the magnanimity to offer it as a gift (for use by society as a whole). Such a 'One in a Crore' noble soul is Mr. Viswanathan.

Yes! The most important feature of the software he created, “Azhagi”, is that it is provided "completely free" - 100% FREE - for public use (along with 100% free support too - even over phone, whatsapp and remote software - which is unheard of in the field of freeware).

Introduced as a free software in the year 2000, though circumstantial compulsion forced part of it to be commercialized in between, from late 2008 it was once again made entirely freeware.

Right from the early days of Azhagi's release, major media outlets such as The Hindu, Sun TV, Jaya TV published news and programs appreciating Mr Viswanathan’s mammoth effort. Azhagi won the Manthan Award in the year 2006 too!

In the path of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's teachings
The core point of Mr. Viswanathan’s fundamental life philosophy and his spirit of service are the teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba and his profound devotion to HIM.

As an ardent devotee of Beloved Baba, he considers all his software (and service activities) as “God’s Own Apps”. Beloved Baba’s key teaching — “Love All, Serve All. Help Ever, Hurt Never.” — is the fundamental motto of Mr. Viswanathan.

He named the primary Tamil font of his software as “Sai Indira” in memory of both his mother Smt. Indira and Beloved Baba. He is a Champion of service (saevaich chemmal) who puts practical wisdom into definite action! A Raja Yogi who performs his service penance on the keyboard slab! (thattachchup palagaiyil saevaith dhavam)

Such sweet instruments of God like him not only bear the hardships of this worldly life, but also, without fearing even an iota, convert challenges into conquests that make God Himself bloom a gentle smile!

Well, those who know his background will surely proclaim as above without the slightest hesitation! Because.....

Sadhaka who transformed trials into triumphs
Shri. Viswanathan hails from the Thanjavur district. He pursued Production Engineering & Management at the Regional Engineering College, Calicut, and later completed his computationally oriented postgraduate studies at Anna University. He began his professional career successfully in reputed organizations such as Bajaj Auto Limited (worked in its MIS department) and TCS.

Since luxury is an obstacle to seekers in the path that leads to the Almighty, it is only natural that the universe does not hesitate to jolt such souls awake with shocks. Souls that are ripening are not allowed to sleep on the silken mattresses, by the spiritual realms. Yes! It struck like a mighty thunderbolt - the rare illness that smote him in 1989. An incurable disease known as Colitis (inflammation of the large intestines) afflicted him.

An exemplary soul for whom suffering held no sway
Amidst those who wail loudly as “Oh no! GOD is testing me!” even for an ordinary 5-day headache..... Amidst the petty-minded who scold God for missing a job promotion.....

Since 1989, he has endured repeated severe attacks of colitis and amoebiasis for several years continuously. The steroids and antibiotics taken for treatment during those years have ruined his immunity.

And, even to this day, he continues to suffer, either daily or at various intervals of time, due to low immunity, and from issues such as allergic rhinitis, nosebleeds, and frequent and uncontrollable bowel movements. And, at one point of time (in 2011), due to long hours of work on software development, a new illness called Uveitis (eye inflammation) also afflicted him (leading to early cataract surgery on each of his eyes - in 2017 and 2019, respectively). Despite all this, he never complains about his own sufferings. Instead, he says that there are countless beings who suffer far more than him and endure far greater pain than he does, and requests people only for one thing: a silent prayer that all those who suffer may be healed.

In 2025, even as of today, without ever blaming and scolding God, he marches on with regal composure, in his Path of Dhyana..... Path of Gnana..... Path of Seva..... Path of Prema..... as an exemplary figure, for the whole world to see.

Due to extremely severe bleeding, pain and agonies, he was forced to resign his job in 1997. Yet, amidst all these sufferings, with a view to help the Tamil society, he developed the Tamil Transliteration Software AZHAGI. As said in a famous lyrical statement by Thiru Gnana Sambandar - in Thevāram (“இடரினுந் தளரினும் எனதுறுநோய் தொடரினும்” [idarinum thaLarinum enadhuRu nhoai thodarinum) – Even as difficulties pressed on, tiredness lingered on, illnesses persisted, he pulled along in his life with abounding gratitude to his beloved wife Meera, saying "My motherly wife only gave me all the comfort and love I needed, at all the times".

Recognizing the profound beauty of her soul, in honour of his loving wife Meera, in the year 2000, he named the software he had developed as "Azhagi" (Beautiful Woman) and released it. This application had a revolutionary feature: even without a Tamil keyboard or an internet connection, whatever typed in English could be transliterated into Tamil, employing a unique Tamil transliteration scheme (easiest and fastest - since 2000).

A Sathya Sai Seva Dal performing SatKarma
The works of Mr Viswanathan are not merely serving as a 'technological contribution' but they shine as a symbol of selfless service, emerging from his deep-rooted spiritual beliefs. In a commercial society where petty money-minded ghosts (arpap panap paeigal) craving for Credits, Copyrights, Intellectual Property, Attribution, and like, Mr. Viswanathan has proclaimed that all his software applications are "GOD’s own apps" and gives them all 100% free, to the public.

Mr. Viswanathan declares that he is “Nothing” and only The Almighty is “Everything”. He is of the opinion that GOD has created him, to provide the Azhagi software to people and serve them. He firmly believes that The Almighty is using him as a tool, to serve the people. More than that, he believes that serving people is the best way in his travel to attain THAT ultimate goal of life, viz. “Self-Realization”.

As of today, Azhagi.com has emerged as an offering of more than 15 world class free software (including the latest Azhagi for Mac systems). He has developed all these software, staying indoors. It is very rare for him to go out of his home even. In fact, for the past few years, he has put up a wholehearted prayer to the ALMIGHTY, to give him boons like "no-Hunger, no-Sleep, no-Thirst, etc."... with the best of health condition and a serene mental state always, in order to carry out Azhagi SatKarma without any interruptions.

Further, Mr. Viswanathan has taken forward this great truth (“Sathya”) that he found to achieve great solace (comfort and consolation in times of distress or sadness) through “Sri Sai Seva” to his son Vrishin too. It is worth mentioning here that Mr. Vrishin is the Youth Co-ordinator for the Chennai Metro (West), T. Nagar Samithi.

Parents who show the good path to their son, the son who dedicates his life to serve his parents — this way, this family is a sacred alliance of holy souls (punniya AthmaakkaL) to shine as a “Sai SAT family" (Sai-Sat-Kudumbam).

It is indeed supremely true (parama saththiyam) that the life and service of this Viswaroopa Sai Sevak Sri Viswanathan, together with the maturity of spiritual wisdom he has attained, stand as a marvellous inspiration for countless people who, caught in the cycle of karma (the cobweb of actions and consequences) struggle without being able to cling to the Lord.

We would like to state with hearty gratitude that even in the system in which this article was compiled by "Sri Sathya Sai Yugam", Azhagi software (developed by Mr. Viswanathan) is carrying out its work successfully.

"A Beautiful Soul" is a rarity in these days of "Self-Promotion" and "Money Over Everything". Yet, on those rare occasions when we sense it, it is only appropriate that we delve deeper and recognize it, and appreciate and celebrate it.

We have been neighbors of Mr. Viswanathan for multiple decades and our family has gotten to know a lot of these pleasantly surprising traits of Mr. Viswanathan.

In these days when commercial considerations top the chart of every software developer - individual and corporate - Mr. Viswanathan not only has developed many applications that help countless people but also has ensured his applications are available cost free, including support of the applications.

We pray that God bless him and his family for the yeoman service he has provided to simplify many complicated / time-consuming / cost-intensive tasks, appreciated by and benefited by countless people. Sashi Gajendran, Shashank Solomon, & Solomon Kishore

    Mr. Muralidharan
Greetings. My name is Muralidharan. I am working as a computer operator in The Horticulture College and Research Institute in Periyakulam (Theni district), as a temporary worker. I have learnt Tamil typing. Still, I found it difficult to type Tamil fonts since many of the Tamil fonts (in computers) are available in different keyboard layouts. By chance, I got an opportunity to talk and discuss about this with Mr Viswanathan, Author of Azhagi.

Mr Viswanathan suggested that the solution for me is available via "Azhagi+" freeware. So, I learnt through Mr Viswanathan, all the Unique features and provisions available in Azhagi+ software and started using them. It became very easy for me to type in all the Tamil fonts in my preferred keyboard layout. After that, I started recommending Azhagi+ to many who came to me for help regarding Tamil typing.

Moreover, many a times, I have used the 'Direct MS Word document conversion tool' in Azhagi+ to help others to convert texts in one Tamil font to another Tamil font. Because of this, whoever came to me for help, got their needs satisfied and left with happiness. The true credit for this belongs to Azhagi+ software and Mr Viswanathan who has developed Azhagi+ software and offered it free to all.

Mr Viswanathan has now given Azhagi++ software also as free, to all of us. I convey my very big thanks to Mr Viswanathan - Author of Azhagi software - on behalf of self and other users. Moreover, I pray to The Lord Almighty for Azhagi+ and Azhagi++ software author Mr Viswanathan and his family members to live a long, healthy and happy life. Thanks.

    Mr. Gopalakrishnan
Greetings. My name is Gopalakrishnan. I am a retired employee of Indian Overseas Bank. I am doing typing from my very early age. I have obtained Fastest Typist certificate for typing in English and Tamil. Moreover, I am also a “GODREJ Champion” (1982).
(Additional information for those who are interested: The "Godrej Champion" Typing Test refers to the historic Godrej National Speed Typing Championship, a prestigious competition from India that ran for years. A national speed typing contest held by Godrej (known for their typewriters) in India, starting in 1982. It challenged the fastest typists, with winners achieving incredible speeds)

I started to use Azhagi software for the first time in 2002 and I have been typing very easily and speedily since then.

Though I have learnt Tamil typing, it was very difficult for me to type Tamil fonts since the Tamil fonts are available in different keyboard layouts (in computers). After starting to use Azhagi+ software, I was able to type all Tamil fonts, very easily, in the same keyboard through which I learned Tamil typing.

Afterwards, I recommended Azhagi+ software to very many who approached me for help regarding Tamil typing. For this, the first and foremost reason is Azhagi+ software and Mr Viswanathan, who developed Azhagi+ and gave it free to all the users. Moreover, Mr Viswanathan has developed Azhagi++ software also now and given it free to all.

I had many doubts while typing in Sanskrit using Azhagi+ and Viswanathan Sir has clarified them.

I am very much indebted to Mr Gopal Sir and Mr Muralidharan also. They have clarified many of my doubts. I have typed more than 40 books so far and they have got published.

I am continuously using Azhagi software.

I wish to convey a very big “Thank you” to Mr Viswanathan - Author of Azhagi software - on behalf of myself and other users. Moreover, through SAIRAM, I pray a long, healthy and happy life to the Lord Almighty for Azhagi+ and Azhagi++ software author Mr Viswanathan and his family members.

      Thanks
      Gopalakrishnan

NOTE: The above is a translation in English for the original writeup in Tamil at https://sathyasaiyugam.blogspot.com/2025/12/blog-post.html, lovingly compiled^^ by Shri. SaiPushkar (https://linkedin.com/in/munishkumarprakasam), who is part of the SSSY (Sri Sathya Sai Yugam) admin team. It is not a word for word OR sentence for sentence translation. I have made some changes here and there and added my own contents too here and there (have italicised some of them), mainly to highlight the following:
  • Azhagi apps are God's Own and not mine.
  • Support for Azhagi apps (via various modes - even over phone and remote tools) is also free.
  • Even as of today (25 years after the inception of Azhagi in 2000), Azhagi still remains as one of the most sought after tools to type/transliterate in Indian languages (in fact, "THE tool" for many, esp. when it comes to Tamil).
(^^) Please note well that the SSSY (Sri Sathya Sai Yugam) write-up on Azhagi is not an interview; it is a compilation. It has been lovingly written by Shri. SaiPushkar. He composed it of his own volition, writing almost all of it based upon various information available on the azhagi.com web pages itself. Reading it will help one gain some good understanding of the history of Swami's Azhagi free apps.

Loving SPR sir
Please click the tab "SPR sir's translation" at the top of this page to read in detail about the initial translation by SPR sir because his translation was the inspiration for the above final translation.

First finalised on
This page got finalised first on 30-May-2026. As with any other web pages of azhagi.com, this page also will undergo modifications, as days go by. For instance, this web page underwent significant changes on 15th and 16th of July 2026.

My athimber (brother-in-law), Shri. Pushpanath, who does not know to read Tamil, fondly felt that a translation of the soulful write-up in https://sathyasaiyugam.blogspot.com/2025/12/blog-post.html on Azhagi's free apps will help people like him (which includes my son too) a lot .

So, I thought of translating the writeup, slowly and steadily (taking the help of google translation for the initial draft), when suddenly Swami reminded me on (28-Dec-2025) about ardent user-wellwishers SPR sir and Nageswaran sir, who could do the translation. It was all His WILL. Sairam.....

Note: SPR (Shri. S.P. Ramamoorthy) sir was one of the very early users of Azhagi. May be the 3rd or 4th user - in the year 2000 or so. I don't remember the exact year now, but somewhere around 2000. And, Nageswaran sir was the one who lovingly translated the aasiriyar.php page (in Tamil) to English (author.php).

When I contacted SPR sir on 29-Dec-2025 to know whether he is in a position - physically and mentally - to attempt the translation, at his present age, he promptly did the translation and sent it to me, the next day itself!!! That was absolutely amazing. Incredible! He is such an adept in translation. I profusely thanked him with all my love.

In Feb 2026 or so, I thought I will spend some time (taking the help of AI engines, Google Translate, etc.) in making a few changes here and there in SPR sir's translation and upload it in azhagi.com but when I started making the changes, I realised that I was making more changes than I initially thought.

Eventually, I felt I will upload the translation which resulted finally, as a fresh translation itself since I had made many changes to the original. My hearty heartfelt thanks in tons to SPR sir for the initial translation he did, without which I might not have been able to arrive at the aforesaid final translation. So, thanks in tons once again, from the very bottom of my heart, to SPR sir, for his wonderful translation and the inspiration he provided me. He translated not only the write-up but the comments which were left by readers of that write-up too! What a heart! Sir had added many valuable extra information too (the reference to the beautiful Thevaram verse, about the Godrej typing speed test, etc.) with all his love, for better understanding to readers. Sairam..... What love! Sairam..... Ultimately, As ever, all Glory and Thanks to the Lord Almighty only, Forever. Sairam.....

Note-1: Loving SPR (Shri. S.P. Ramamoorthy) sir was one of the very early users of Azhagi. May be the 3rd or 4th user - in the year 2000 or so. I don't remember the exact year now, but somewhere around 2000. He became an ardent user of Azhagi thereafter and a constant well-wisher and source of encouragement to me.

Note-2: The final translation is an output after a striving effort from me (as it was from SPR sir too), to the extent possible, to capture the spirit of the original write-up. So, it is not a word for word OR sentence for sentence translation. I have made some changes here and there and added some contents of my own too here and there (have italicised some of them), mainly to highlight the following:
  • Azhagi apps are God's Own and not mine.
  • Support for Azhagi apps (via various modes - even over phone and remote tools) is also free.
  • Even as of today (25 years after the inception of Azhagi in 2000), Azhagi still remains as one of the most sought after tools to type/transliterate in Indian languages (in fact, "THE tool" for many, esp. when it comes to Tamil).
Please see users and testimonials pages in this regard. You can of course ask any AI tool too, about Azhagi, to see all that it says about Azhagi apps.

So, you can consider my final translation as my own new write-up (titled 'Azhagi, as of 2025') too — taking cue from the 'Dec 2025' write-up compiled by Shri. SaiPushkar in 'Sri Sathya Sai Yugam' blogspot. In the future, God-Willing, I may write an entirely new write-up too, on the title 'Azhagi, as of 2025' OR 'Azhagi, as of TODAY'. Sairam.....

Actually, it is extremely hard to translate a write-up of the kind poet Shri. SaiPushkar has provided, giving full justification in capturing the exact feelings and emotions he has shared in Tamil. Shri. SaiPushkar's loving heart can be best appreciated only when someone who knows Tamil reads or hears the writeup in Tamil itself.

My appa actually cried over phone after reading the above writeup. Appa (94 years old) was feeling too emotional. He told several times that shri. SaiPushkar has written so so so well. He enquired where he stays. Just like Shri. SaiPushkar's appa (and many other such extremely hardworking appas in this world), my appa also struggled a lotttt to bring us all up (4 children), with his meagre salary. Sairam.....

My sister wrote:

Very many hearty heartyfelt testimonials for Azhagi free apps are here.

Just one sample testimonial alone hereunder (from the abovementioned page):

Mr. Karunakaran, Australia
Sairam Viswanathan,
I am sure you are at the service of Bhagavan Baba. Azhagi is truly a wonderful software. I live in Australia. I originally come from Srilanka but settled in Sydney. I have used this software and created many of Swami's Veda Pushpanjali Vedic Chants in Tamil. I type the chants in Tamil and prepare copies and distribute to people. Baba's statement 'Love all Serve all' is truly in action.
Sincere prayers for the growth and well-being of the true inner beauty of Azhagi.
