Embodiments of Divine Love! Samyak-kirtanam Sankirtanam (The best form of devotional singing is congregational singing). There is a big difference between Kirtanam and Sankirtanam. Kirtanam is an individual affair. It is singing by an individual for the fulfilment of his prayers. Sankirtanam aims at the well-being of the whole universe. This is also described as Samajika bhajan (community singing). This method of singing bhajans was first initiated by Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. Sankirtana aims at demonstrating unity in diversity. When all the participants combine to sing in unison with one voice, it is described as Sankirtana. The essential purpose of Sankirtana is to earn the love of God. Combining one's voice, tune, feeling and rhythm to the appropriate beat of the song, the devotee should immerse himself in the singing. Harmonising the feeling with devotion and Love, the sacred words of the song should be an outpouring of love towards God. That alone is devotional singing. (Divine Discourse Mar 03, 1992)

தெய்வீக ப்ரேமையின் திருவுருவங்களே! ‘சம்யக் கீர்த்தனம் இதி சங்கீர்த்தனம்’, அதாவது, பஜனைகளில் கூட்டு பஜனையே மிகச் சிறந்த முறையாகும். கீர்த்தனத்திற்கும் சங்கீர்த்தனத்திற்கும் பெரும் வித்தியாசம் இருக்கிறது. கீர்த்தனம் என்பது தனிப்பட்ட முறையிலானது. மேலும் இது ஒரு தனி மனிதன் தனது பிரார்த்தனைகள் நிறைவேறுவதற்காக பாடுவதாகும். சங்கீர்த்தனம் என்பது பிரபஞ்சமனைத்தின் க்ஷேமத்தை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டது. இது சாமாஜிக பஜன், அதாவது சமூக பஜன் என்றும் விவரிக்கப்படுகிறது. இவ்வாறு பஜன் பாடும் முறை சீக்கிய மதத்தைத் தோற்றுவித்த குரு நானக்கால் முதன்முதலில் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. சங்கீர்த்தனம், வேற்றுமையில் ஒற்றுமையை வெளிப்படுத்துவதை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டது. பங்கேற்கும் அனைவரும் ஒருமித்த குரலில் ஒன்றிணைந்து பாடும் பஜனை, சங்கீர்த்தனம் எனப்படுகிறது. சங்கீர்த்தனத்தின் முக்கிய நோக்கம் இறைவனின் ப்ரேமைக்குப் பாத்திரமாவதாகும். பக்தன், தன்னுடைய நாதம், பாவம், பக்தி ஆகியவற்றை ஸ்ருதி, லயம் மற்றும் ராக தாளத்துடன் சேர்த்துக் கொண்டு பாடுவதில் மூழ்கி விட வேண்டும். பாவத்துடன் பக்தியையும் ப்ரேமையும் சேர்த்து புனிதமான சொற்களால் வர்ணித்து இறைவனை வழிபடுவதாக இருக்க வேண்டும். இது மட்டுமே பஜனையாகும்.
