All religions have laid stress on purity of heart. They have also declared that without a pure heart all spiritual exercises are valueless. How can purity of heart be realised if the mind is filled with egoism? The body can be cleaned with water. But the heart can be cleaned only by chanting the Lord's name. Prahlada, who was the son of an asura (demon king), Jatayu, a bird, and an animal like Gajendra, the lord of the elephants, redeemed themselves by relying on the Lord's name. As long as one is filled with ego and relies on one’s own strength, the benefit of the Lord's grace will not come to him. It is only when Gajendra declared that he knew no one other than God who could save him here or in the hereafter that the Lord rushed to his rescue. (Divine Discourse, Jun 22, 1989)

எல்லா மதங்களும் இதயத் தூய்மையை வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளன. தூய்மையான இதயம் இல்லாமல் அனைத்து ஆன்மிக சாதனைகளும் பயனற்றவையே என்றும் அறிவித்துள்ளன. அகங்காரத்தால் மனம் நிறைந்திருந்தால் இதயத் தூய்மையை எப்படிப் பெறமுடியும்? உடலை நீரால் சுத்தம் செய்யலாம். ஆனால், இறைவனின் திருநாமத்தை உச்சரிப்பதனால் மட்டுமே இதயத்தைத் தூய்மைப்படுத்த முடியும். அசுர அரசனின் மகனாகிய பிரஹலாதன், பறவையாகிய ஜடாயு, விலங்காகிய கஜேந்திரன் ஆகியோர் இறைவனுடைய திருநாமத்தை நம்பியே வாழ்வில் கடைத்தேறினார்கள். அகந்தையால் நிறைந்து, தன்னுடைய பலத்தையே நம்பி இருக்கும்வரை ஒருவனுக்கு இறைஅருளின் பலன் கிட்டாது. தன்னை இம்மையிலும் மறுமையிலும் காக்கும் தெய்வத்தைத் தவிர வேறு எவரையும் தான் அறியேன் என்று கஜேந்திரன் கூக்குரலிட்ட பிறகே அவனைக் காக்க இறைவன் விரைந்தோடி வந்தான்.
