People greet the new year as if it is going to confer on them some new benefits. The good or evil, the gains or losses, the renown or infamy experienced by people are not the outcome of the passage of years. They are the consequences of their own actions. Samvatsara (the year) is one of the names of God because God is associated with time. He is also known as Kala-atmaka (Time-spirit). Hence, we should not consider the Lord, who is the spirit of Time, as likely to cause good or ill to us. Our actions, good or bad, bear fruits, according to their nature. There is no need to wait for a new year to bring new tidings. Every moment is new. Many are wondering what troubles and losses the new year will bring. For all our troubles and difficulties, the year is not responsible. Our conduct alone is responsible. If our actions are good the results will be good. (Divine Discourse, Apr 7, 1997)

புத்தாண்டு ஏதோ புதிதாக சில நன்மைகளை வழங்கப் போகிறது என்று எண்ணி மக்கள் அதை வரவேற்கின்றனர். மக்கள் அனுபவிக்கும் நன்மையோ தீமையோ, லாபமோ, நஷ்டமோ, புகழ்ச்சியோ, இகழ்ச்சியோ, வருடங்கள் கடந்து செல்வதனால் ஏற்படும் விளைவு அல்ல. அவை அவர்களுடைய செயல்களின் விளைவுகளே. ஸம்வத்ஸரம் (ஆண்டு) என்பது இறைவனின் திருநாமங்களில் ஒன்றாகும், ஏனெனில் இறைவன் காலத்துடன் தொடர்புடையவன். அவன் கால-ஆத்மகா (காலத்தின் ஆத்மா) என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறான். எனவே, காலத்தின் ஆத்மாவான இறைவன் நமக்கு நன்மையோ தீமையோ விளைவிப்பதாக நாம் கருதக்கூடாது. நமது செயல்கள், நல்லதோ கெட்டதோ, அவற்றின் தன்மைக்கேற்ப பலன்களைத் தருகின்றன. புத்தாண்டு புதிய நற்செய்திகளைக் கொண்டு வருமென்று காத்திருக்க வேண்டிய அவசியமில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு தருணமும் புதியதே. புத்தாண்டு என்ன பிரச்சனைகளையும் இழப்புகளையும் கொண்டு வருமோ என்று பலர் கலங்கிக்கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள். நம்முடைய பிரச்சனைகள் மற்றும் சிரமங்களுக்கு வருடம் பொறுப்பல்ல. நம்முடைய நடத்தை மட்டுமே பொறுப்பு. நமது செயல்கள் நன்றாக இருந்தால் பலன்களும் நல்லவையாக இருக்கும்.
