Modern man suffers from the sense of possession. This is a negative attitude. He is obsessed with the idea of ‘my’ and ‘mine’. He attaches excessive importance to the body, forgetting the most precious Atmic principle that is within it, which will give him enduring bliss. The reason for this attachment is the failure to use senses properly and becoming a slave of the desires prompted by the senses. The eyes, ears and other sense organs should be used only to perceive sacred things. They should not be used indiscriminately to enjoy whatever pleases them. This is the reason why Swami advises people not to see evil, speak evil, or hear what is evil, and to see what is good, hear what is sacred, and speak what is good! These may seem simple maxims, but are full of profound significance! People should constantly discriminate between negative and positive actions. All bad and immoral actions are negative in character and should be eschewed! (Divine Discourse, Feb 15, 1998.)

நவீனகால மனிதன் தன்னுடைமை உணர்வால் அவதிப்படுகிறான். இது எதிர்மறையான உணர்வாகும். அவன் "நான்" மற்றும் "எனது" என்ற கருத்தில் வெறித்தனமாக உள்ளான். அவன் உடலுக்கு அதீதமான முக்கியத்துவம் அளித்து, நிரந்தர ஆனந்தத்தைத் தரவல்ல உள்ளுறையும் மதிப்பு மிக்க ஆத்ம தத்துவத்தை மறந்து விடுகின்றான். புலன்களை சரியாகப் பயன்படுத்தத் தவறி, அவற்றால் தூண்டப்படும் ஆசைகளுக்கு ஒரு அடிமையாக ஆகி விடுவதே இந்தப் பற்றுதலுக்கான காரணமாகும். கண்கள், காதுகள் மற்றும் பிற புலனுறுப்புகள், புனிதமான விஷயங்களை உணர்வதற்கு மட்டுமே பயன்படுத்தப்பட வேண்டும். பிடித்தவற்றை எல்லாம் பகுத்தறிவின்றி அனுபவிப்பதற்கு அவற்றைப் பயன்படுத்தக் கூடாது தீயதைப் பார்க்காதே, தீயதைப் பேசாதே, தீயதைக் கேட்காதே என்றும், நல்லதைப் பாருங்கள், புனிதமானவற்றைக் கேளுங்கள், நல்லதைப் பேசுங்கள் என்றும் மக்களை ஸ்வாமி அறிவுறுத்துவதன் காரணம் இதுவே! இவை எளிய கோட்பாடுகளாகத் தோன்றலாம், ஆனால் அவை ஆழ்ந்த முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்தவை. மக்கள் தொடர்ந்து நேர்மறை செயல்கள் - எதிர்மறை செயல்கள் எனப் பகுத்து ஆராய வேண்டும். தீய முறையற்ற செயல்கள் அனைத்தும் எதிர்மறையானவை; அவற்றைக் கண்டிப்பாக விலக்க வேண்டும்!
