Almost every activity of man is motivated by self-interest (swartam). This concern for self-interest is opposed to the divinity immanent in man. Without realising this divinity, how can man achieve peace internally or in the world outside? The individual, society and the world - all the three are inextricably inter-connected. The individual's welfare is dependent on the state of the nation. Everyone should strive to develop their spiritual qualities and utilise them for promoting the interests of the community and the country. Service to society should become the constant concern of the individual. There is no greater quality in man than selfless love, which expresses itself in service to others. Such love can be the source of real bliss. The relationship between karma and karma-yoga should be properly understood. Ordinary karma (action) done with attachment or desires causes bondage. But desireless, selfless action becomes karma-yoga. Our life should become a yoga (Divine Communion) rather than a roga (disease). (Divine Discourse, Apr 06, 1983)

அநேகமாக மனிதனுடைய எல்லா செயல்களும் சுயநலத்தினாலேயே உந்தப்படுகின்றன. இந்த சுயநலத்தின் மீதுள்ள அக்கறை, ஒவ்வொருவருள்ளும் உறையும் தெய்வத்திற்கு எதிரானது. இந்த தெய்வத்தை உணராமல், அகத்திலோ, புறஉலகிலோ மனிதன் எவ்வாறு சாந்தியை அடைய முடியும்? தனிமனிதன், சமூகம், உலகம் - இவை மூன்றும் பிரிக்க முடியாத வகையில் ஒன்றோடொன்று இணைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. தனிநபரின் நலன் நாட்டின் நிலையைப் பொறுத்ததே. ஒவ்வொருவரும் தங்களின் ஆன்மிகப் பண்புகளை வளர்த்துக் கொண்டு, சமூகம் மற்றும் நாட்டின் நலன்களை மேம்படுத்துவதற்கு அவற்றைப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும். சமூகசேவை தனிமனிதனின் நிரந்தரமான அக்கறையாக மாற வேண்டும். மனிதனிடம் தன்னலமற்ற ப்ரேமையை விட மேன்மையான குணம் வேறில்லை; அதுவே பிறருக்கு ஆற்றும் சேவையாகவும் வெளிப்படுகிறது. இத்தகைய ப்ரேமையே உண்மையான ஆனந்தத்தின் தோற்றுவாயாக இருக்க முடியும். கர்மாவிற்கும், கர்ம யோகத்திற்கும் உள்ள சம்பந்தத்தைச் சரியாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டும். பற்றுதல் அல்லது ஆசைகளுடன் ஆற்றப்படும் சாதாரண ‘கர்மா’ பந்தத்தை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது. ஆனால், ஆசையற்ற, தன்னலமற்ற ‘கர்மா’ ‘கர்மயோக’மாகிறது. நம்முடைய வாழ்க்கை ‘ரோக’மாக ஆகாமல் ‘யோக’மாக ஆக வேண்டும்.
