Emperor Bali welcomed Vamana with open arms and promised that he would offer whatever he desired. Bali's preceptor, Sukracharya was an all-knowing counsellor. Aware that Vamana was an incarnation of Vishnu, he advised Bali to go back on his offer to Vamana. But Bali's magnanimity and greatness may be seen in the fact that he refused to accept his preceptor's advice. Bali said, "When the Lord Himself has come to me with outstretched hands asking for a gift, what greater good fortune can I have than making the gift from my humble hands? I am prepared to give away everything regardless of what happens to me." The Vedas have declared that in observing Dharma and doing one's duty for the Divine, the opposing words of no one - father, mother, preceptor or anybody else should be heeded. Bharata, Prahlada, Meera and others are examples of those who went against the injunctions of mother, father, husband respectively in adhering to their devotion to the Lord. No one is entitled to be a barrier between the devotee and the Lord, whatever may be that person’s relationship with the devotee. (Divine Discourse, Sep 12, 1989)

பலிச்சக்ரவர்த்தி வாமன மூர்த்தியை இருகரம் நீட்டி வரவேற்று, அவர் விரும்புவது எதுவானாலும் அதை வழங்குவதாக வாக்களித்தார். பலியின் குருவான சுக்ராச்சாரியார் அனைத்தும் அறிந்த ஆசார்யன். வாமன மூர்த்தி விஷ்ணுவின் அவதாரம் என்பதை அறிந்த அவர், வாமனருக்கு அளித்த வாக்குறுதியைத் திரும்பப் பெறுமாறு பலியிடம் அறிவுறுத்தினார். ஆனால் பலியின் பெருந்தன்மையையும் விசால இதயத்தையும் அவர் தனது குருவின் அறிவுரையை ஏற்க மறுத்ததில் காண முடிகிறது. “சாட்சாத் இறைவனே கை நீட்டி என்னிடம் வரம் கேட்டு வரும்போது, என் கைகளால் அந்த வரத்தை பணிவுடன் வழங்குவதை விடப் பெரிய பாக்கியம் வேறென்ன இருக்க முடியும்? எனக்கு என்ன நேர்ந்தாலும் எல்லாவற்றையும் கொடுக்க நான் தயாராக இருக்கிறேன்” என்று பலிச்சக்ரவர்த்தி கூறினார். தர்மத்தைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பதிலும், தெய்வத்துக்கான ஒருவரது கடமைகளை ஆற்றும் போதும், அதற்கு எதிரான சொற்கள் தந்தை, தாய், குரு அல்லது வேறு எவரிடமிருந்து வந்தாலும் பொருட்படுத்த வேண்டாம் என்று வேதங்கள் அறிவுறுத்துகின்றன. பரதன், பிரஹலாதன், மீரா மற்றும் பலர் முறையே தாய், தந்தை, கணவன் ஆகியோருடைய கட்டளைகளுக்கு செவி சாய்க்காமல் இறைவனிடம் பக்தி பூண்டவர்களின் உதாரணமாகத் திகழ்கின்றனர். பக்தனுடன் ஒருவருடைய உறவு எப்பேர்ப்பட்டதாக இருந்தாலும் சரி, பக்தனுக்கும் இறைவனுக்கும் இடையில் தடையாக இருக்க எவருக்கும் உரிமை இல்லை.
