Buddha realised that self-realisation cannot be attained through penance or prayers or austerities. Buddha emphasised the importance of developing good vision (samyak drishti). Good vision leads to good thoughts, good speech and good action. He laid stress on association with good people. The company of good leads to good deeds. The four rules to be observed are: cultivate good company, avoid association with evil persons, do meritorious deeds always, and remember what is transient and what is eternal. Good company does not mean merely association with good people. Sat refers to the Divine. What is required is to seek the company of God, who is the source of all bliss. When one's thoughts are centred on God, one's feelings, speech, and actions get sanctified - samyak bhavam, samyak sravanam and samyak kriya. This leads to the purity of inner sense organs. Purity in thought, word, and deed is the requisite for experiencing the Divine. (Divine Discourse, May 11 1998)

தவம், பிரார்த்தனைகள் அல்லது விரதங்கள் மூலம் மெய்யுணர்வை அடைய முடியாது என்பதை புத்தர் உணர்ந்தார். புத்தர் நல்ல பார்வையை (சம்யக் திருஷ்டி) வளர்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டியதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை வலியுறுத்தினார். நல்ல பார்வையைக் கொண்டிருப்பது, நல்ல எண்ணங்கள், நல்ல பேச்சு, நல்ல செயல் ஆகியவற்றுக்கு வழிவகுக்கும். மேலும் நல்லவர்களுடன் பழக வேண்டும் என்றும் அவர் வலியுறுத்தினார். நல்லவர்களின் நட்பு, நற்செயல்களுக்கு இட்டுச் செல்லும். நல்லோரின் நட்பை வளர்த்துக்கொள்வது, தீயவர்களின் நட்பைத் தவிர்ப்பது, எப்போதும் புண்ணியச் செயல்களைச் செய்வது, மற்றும் நிலையற்றது எது, நிலையானது எது என்பதை நினைவில் கொள்வது ஆகியவையே நாம் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டிய நான்கு விதிகளாகும். நல்லோரின் நட்பு என்றால் நல்லவர்களுடன் பழகுவது என்பது மட்டுமல்ல. ‘சத்’ என்பது தெய்வீகத்தைக் குறிக்கிறது. பரிபூரணமான ஆனந்தத்திற்கு மூலாதாரமான இறைவனின் துணையை நாடுவதே தேவையானதாகும். ஒருவரது எண்ணங்கள் இறைவனை மையமாகக் கொண்டிருக்குமானால், அவருடைய உணர்வுகள், பேச்சு மற்றும் செயல்கள் – சம்யக் பாவம், சம்யக் சிரவணம் மற்றும் சம்யக் கிரியா என புனிதமடைகின்றன. இது அக உணர்வின் பரிசுத்தத்திற்கு வழிவகுக்கிறது. எனவே தெய்வீகத்தை அனுபவிப்பதற்கு, சிந்தனை, சொல், செயல் ஆகியவற்றின் தூய்மையே தேவை.
