Rama is the bee that sucks the honey of devotion from the lotus of the heart. The bee loosens the petals of the flower it sits upon; but Rama adds to its beauty and fragrance! He is like the Sun, which draws water to itself by its rays, and accumulating it as clouds, sends it back as rain to quench the thirst of the earth! Rama, the mystic potent sound, is born in the navel and it rises up to the tongue and dances gladly thereon! The Vedic declaration, Tat-twam-asi (That-thou-art) is enshrined in “Rama”, which consists of three sounds: 'Ra,' 'aa,' and ‘ma’. Of these, ‘Ra’ is the symbol of Tat (That; Brahman, God), ‘Ma’ is the symbol of Twam (Thou; jivi, individual) and ‘aa’ that connects the two is the symbol of the identity of the two! The word Rama has also numerological significance: ‘Ra’ counts as two, ‘aa’ counts as zero, and ‘ma’ counts as five - so, Rama adds up to seven, an auspicious number. We have seven notes of music, seven heavenly sages, and reciting Rama for seven days continuously is considered especially fruitful! (Divine Discourse, May 16, 1968)

ராமர், இதயத்தாமரையில் இருந்து பக்தி எனும் தேனை உறிஞ்சும் தேனீயாவார். தேனீ தான் அமரும் பூவின் இதழ்களை உதிர்த்துவிடும்; ஆனால் ராமர் அதன் அழகையும் நறுமணத்தையும் கூட்டுபவர்! தன் கதிர்களால் நீரை ஆவியாக்கி ஈர்த்து, அதை மேகங்களாகத் திரட்டி, பூமியின் தாகத்தைத் தணிக்க மழையாகப் பொழிய வைக்கும் சூரியனைப் போன்றவர் அவர்! ‘ராம’ எனும் சக்திவாய்ந்த மந்திரம் நாபியிலிருந்து தோன்றி, நாக்கு வரை உயர்ந்து, அதன் மீது மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் நடனமாடும் ஒன்றாகும்! வேத மஹாவாக்கியமான தத்-த்வம்-அஸி (அது-நீ-தான்) ‘ராம’ என்ற பதத்தில் பொதிந்துள்ளது. இந்த ‘ராம’ எனும் பதம் 'ர’, 'ஆ’ மற்றும் 'ம' எனும் மூன்று ஒலிகளைக் கொண்டது. இவற்றில், 'ர' என்பது தத் (அது; பிரம்மன், இறைவன்), 'ம' என்பது த்வம் (நீ; ஜீவி, தனிநபர்) மற்றும் இரண்டையும் இணைக்கும் 'ஆ' என்பது இரண்டின் ஏகத்துவத்தையும் குறிக்கின்றன. ‘ராம’ எனும் பதம் எண்கணிதப்படி சிறப்பு வாய்ந்தது: ‘ர’ இரண்டாகவும், ‘ஆ’ பூஜ்யமாகவும், ‘ம’ ஐந்தாகவும் கணக்கிடப்படுகிறது - எனவே, இந்த மூன்றையும் கூட்டினால், ‘ராம’ என்பது மங்களகரமான எண்ணான ஏழாக ஆகிறது. நமக்கு ஸப்தஸ்வரங்கள், ஸப்தரிஷிகள் என்று இருக்கின்றன; மேலும் ராமநாமத்தை தொடர்ந்து ஏழு நாட்கள் (ஸப்தாஹம்) பாராயணம் செய்வது மிகுந்த பலனளிக்கக் கூடியதாக கருதப்படுகிறது.
