Our ancients practised economy in speech. Students today tend to be loquacious. Excessive speech harms the mind. "Less speech, more happiness." The ancients practised three kinds of silent penance to control speech. The first was Vak-mounam (silence of the tongue), the second one was Mano-mounam (silence of the mind) and the third was Maha-mounam (supreme silence). Vak mounam (silence in speech) meant confining one's speech to the limit and the needs of the occasion. By this discipline, the excessive talk was avoided. As a result, the power of their speech was conserved and enhanced. Discipline in speech also resulted in truthfulness. Speaking only Truth served to purify their thoughts. By this means they acquired Siddhi (realisation of truth) and Jnana-siddhi (acquisition of the highest wisdom). Therefore purity in speech is vital. It has to be achieved by restraint in speech. நம் முன்னோர்கள் பேச்சில் சிக்கனத்தைக் கடைப்பிடித்தார்கள். இன்றைய மாணவர்கள் அரட்டை அடிப்பவர்களாக இருக்கிறார்கள். அளவுக்கு மீறிய பேச்சு மனதைக் கெடுக்கிறது. "குறைந்த பேச்சு, நிறைந்த மகிழ்ச்சி." பேச்சைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த மூன்று விதமான மௌன விரதத்தை முன்னோர்கள் கடைப்பிடித்தனர். முதலாவது வாக்-மௌனம் (பேச்சில் மௌனம்), இரண்டாவது மனோ-மௌனம் (மனதில் மௌனம்), மூன்றாவது மஹா-மௌனம் (மிக உயர்ந்த மௌனம்). வாக்-மௌனம் (பேச்சில் மௌனம்) என்றால், சந்தர்ப்பத்தின் தேவைக்கு ஏற்ப ஒருவரது பேச்சை வரம்பிற்குள் வைத்திருப்பதாகும். இந்தக் கட்டுப்பாட்டின் மூலம் அளவுக்கு மீறிய பேச்சு தவிர்க்கப்பட்டது. இதன் விளைவாக, அவர்களின் பேச்சு சக்தி பாதுகாக்கப்பட்டு மேம்படுத்தப்பட்டது. பேச்சில் ஒழுக்கம் வாய்மையாகவும் பரிமளித்தது. சத்தியத்தை மட்டுமே பேசுவது அவர்களுடைய சிந்தனைகளைத் தூய்மைப்படுத்த உதவியது. இதன் மூலம் அவர்கள் சித்தியையும் (மெய்யுணர்தல்), ஞானசித்தியையும் (மிக உயர்ந்த ஞானத்தைப் பெறுதல்) அடைந்தார்கள். எனவே, பேச்சில் பரிசுத்தம் அத்தியாவசியமானதாகும். இதனை, பேச்சில் வரம்பைக் கடைப்பிடித்து பெற வேண்டும்.
