Look at the bee! It has contact only with sweetness; it approaches only flowers that possess nectar; it is not attracted to other places; it doesn’t proceed there at all. Similarly, one has to give up all inclinations toward sensory attractions, toward the rubbish cart of the untrue and the impermanent. As far as possible, one has to direct the mind to all holy things, which yield sweetness and the joy associated with the Lord. To attain these, time is needed, of course. How long that time will be, depends on the activities of thought, word, and deed as well as on the motives that impel those actions. If one examines deeply the success in getting rid of all idea of self, one can oneself gauge the progress one has made! Instead, if one is engaged in counting the rules and adding up the time spent and the expense incurred, such meditation can belong only to the objective world; it can never come into the subjective and spiritual fields! தேனீயைப் பாருங்கள்! அது இனிமையுடன் மட்டுமே தொடர்பு கொண்டிருக்கும். எந்த மலர்களில் இனிமையான தேன் இருக்கிறதோ, அவற்றை மட்டுமே நாடும், மற்ற இடங்களுக்கு ஈர்க்கப்படுவதுமில்லை; அங்கு செல்வதும் இல்லை. அதே போல, அனைத்து உலக விஷய வாசனைகள், குப்பைவண்டியைப் போன்ற அசத்தியமான-ஸ்திரமற்றவை ஆகியவற்றின் கவர்ச்சியான ஈர்ப்புக்களை ஒருவர் தவிர்க்க வேண்டும். முடிந்த அளவிற்கு, சர்வேஸ்வரனின் மதுரானந்தத்தை அளிக்கவல்ல பவித்ரமான குணங்களின் மீது மனம் செல்லுமாறு பணிக்க வேண்டும். அவ்வாறு செய்வதற்கு சில காலம் பிடிக்கும். அந்தக் காலம் கூட, ஒருவரது மனம், வாக்கு, உடல் ஆகியவற்றின் செயல்பாடுகளையும், அவற்றின் பின் உள்ள உந்துதல்களையும் பொறுத்தே இருக்கும். ஒருவர், அனைத்து சுயநல உணர்வுகளையும் விட்டொழிப்பதில் வெற்றி பெறுவதை ஆழ்ந்து ஆராய்ந்தால், தன்னுடைய முன்னேற்றத்தை தானே மதிப்பீடு செய்ய முடியும்! அப்படி இல்லாமல், தான் கடைப்பிடித்த நியமங்கள், கழித்த காலங்கள், செய்த செலவினங்கள் ஆகியவற்றை ஒருவர் கணக்கிட்டுக்கொண்டு இருந்தால், அந்த தியானம் உலக சம்பந்தப்பட்டதாக இருக்குமே அன்றி, ஆத்ம சம்பந்தப்பட்டதாக ஒருபோதும் இருக்காது!
