Athi Sarvathra Varjayeth is an ancient axiom; it means, ‘Avoid excess, in all places’. You must respect the limits set by experienced sages in sacred texts. They act like embankments that curb the flood waters; they direct the raging passions towards harmless channels and save you from ruin. Of course, man has elementary needs - physical, mental and intellectual, these have to be fulfilled in some measure. But, there is no need to encumber oneself with unwanted food, superfluous furniture and multi-roomed mansions. Luxury enervates and enslaves. Leaders must set an example in this respect, for people usually try to imitate and emulate them. An example is more effective than a precept. An ounce of practice is worth more than a ton of preaching. That is why I declare, "My life is My message”. You must transform your lives into examples of the ideal you preach. Parents must set good examples for children, and teachers must set good examples for students! (Divine Discourse, Apr 01, 1975.)

‘அதி ஸர்வத்ர வர்ஜயேத்’ என்பது ஒரு பழமையான வாசகம்; "கூடுதலாக உபயோகிப்பதை எல்லா இடங்களிலும் தவிர்க்க" என்பது இதன் பொருள். அனுபவம் மிக்க முனிவர்கள் புனித கிரந்தங்களில் நிர்ணயித்த வரம்புகளை நீங்கள் மதிக்க வேண்டும். அவை வெள்ளத்தைக் கட்டுப்படுத்தும் கரைகள் போல விளங்குகின்றன; அவை கொந்தளிக்கும் உணர்ச்சிகளை தீமை பயக்காத வழிகளில் செலுத்தி, உங்களை அழிவிலிருந்து காக்கின்றன. மனிதனுக்கு, உடல், மனம் மற்றும் புத்தி ரீதியான அடிப்படைத் தேவைகள் இருப்பது இயற்கையே; ஓரளவு இவை பூர்த்தி செய்யப்படத்தான் வேண்டும். ஆனால், தேவையற்ற உணவு, மிதமிஞ்சிய வீட்டுச்சாமான்கள் மற்றும் பல அறைகள் கொண்ட மாளிகை என குவித்து மனிதன் தனக்குத்தானே இடையூறு செய்து கொள்ளக்கூடாது. சொகுசான வாழ்க்கை மனிதனை பலவீனப்படுத்தி அடிமையாக்குகிறது. இந்த விஷயத்தில் தலைவர்கள் ஒரு முன்மாதிரியாக இருக்க வேண்டும், ஏனென்றால் மக்கள் பொதுவாக அவர்களைப் போல நடக்கவும், அவர்களைப் பின்பற்றவும் முயற்சி செய்கிறார்கள். ஒரு முன்னுதாரணமாக இருப்பது, ஒரு அறிவுரையை விட அதிகம் பயனளிக்கும். ஒரு டன் அளவு போதனையை விட, ஒரு அவுன்ஸ் அளவாவது கடைப்பிடித்தல் சிறந்தது. அதனால் தான், "என் வாழ்க்கையே என் போதனை" என்று நான் அறிவித்து இருக்கிறேன். நீங்கள் உபதேசிக்கின்ற விஷயங்களை வாழ்க்கையில் கடைப்பிடிக்கும் உதாரணங்களாக நீங்கள் மாற வேண்டும். பெற்றோர்கள் பிள்ளைகளுக்கு நல்ல முன்னுதாரணங்களாகவும், ஆசிரியர்கள் மாணவர்களுக்கு நல்ல முன்னுதாரணங்களாகவும் இருத்தல் அவசியம்!
