Satya and Dharma (Truth and Righteousness) are the most important concepts in the Ramayana. Vedas, which are the very life-breath of Bharatiyas, proclaim: “Satyam Vada; Dharmam Chara (Speak the Truth; Act Righteously)”. To honour the plighted word of his father, Rama elected to go to the forest leaving Ayodhya. Truth is the foundation for all righteousness. There is no greater religion than truth. Rama stood out as an upholder of Truth to fulfil the promise of his father, to maintain the traditions of his Ikshvaku dynasty, to protect his country and for the sake of the welfare of the world. Everyone who calls themselves a human being should stand up for truth in the same manner. Mahatmas (noble ones) are those whose actions, thoughts and words are in perfect accord. Wicked people are those whose thoughts, words and deeds are at a variance with each other. Lord Rama indeed is a Mahatma (a noble one), worthy of adoration for time immemorial! சத்யமும், தர்மமும், ஸ்ரீமத் ராமாயணத்தின் மிகவும் முக்கியமான கோட்பாடுகள். பாரத மக்களின் உயிர் மூச்சு போன்ற வேதங்கள், ‘’ சத்யம் வத, தர்மம் சர ( சத்யத்தையே பேசு, தர்மத்தின் படி நட)’’ எனப் பறை சாற்றுகின்றன. அவரது தந்தை அளித்த வாக்குறுதியை மதிப்பதற்காக, ஸ்ரீராமர் அயோத்தியை விடுத்து, கானகம் செல்வதைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தார். சத்யமே, அனைத்து தர்மத்தின் அஸ்திவாரம் ஆகும். சத்யத்தை விட உயர்ந்த மதம் எதுவும் இல்லை. அவரது தந்தையின் வாக்குறுதியை நிறைவற்றுவதிலும், இக்ஷ்வாகு வம்சத்தின் பாரம்பரியத்தைக் கடைப்பிடிப்பதிலும், அவரது நாட்டைக் காப்பதிலும், உலகத்தின் க்ஷேமத்திற்காகவும் ஸ்ரீராமர்,சத்யத்தை நிலை நாட்டுபவராகத் திகழ்ந்தார். தங்களை ஒரு மனிதன் என்று கூறிக் கொள்ளும் ஒவ்வொருவரும், இதே விதத்தில்,சத்யத்தை நிலைநாட்ட வேண்டும். எவரது சிந்தனைகள், சொற்கள் மற்றும் செயல்கள் பூரணமான இசைவோடு இருக்கின்றனவோ, அவர்களே மஹாத்மாக்கள். எவரது சிந்தனைகள், சொற்கள் மற்றும் செயல்கள் ஒன்றுக்கொன்று முரணாக இருக்கின்றனவோ, அவர்களே துராத்மாக்கள். யுக,யுகமாக ஆராதனை செய்யத் தகுதி பெற்ற ஸ்ரீராமர், உண்மையிலேயே ஒரு மஹாத்மாவே !
